Particularidades de la atención a las demencias en el hogar de ancianos

Resumen


La demencia en una larga y debilitante enfermedad cuya evolución se caracteriza por pérdida progresiva de la autonomía y la capacidad, llegando al deterioro cognitivo marcado y a la dependencia. Un número considerable de adultos mayores con demencia, es admitido en hogares de ancianos, en diferentes etapas del estado demencial. El objetivo de este artículo es destacar algunos elementos en relación con la epidemiología, predictores de institucionalización, diagnóstico, comorbilidad y aspectos especificos del cuidado y tratamiento, que permitan personalizar su manejo en las residencias. De esta forma se incrementa el nivel de conocimientos sobre la enfermedad y se optimiza el tratamiento y calidad de vida de la persona mayor con demencia.
